Why DIRECTV May Request a Bill of Sale

Understanding the Change of Ownership Verification Process

One of the most common questions we receive during a new DIRECTV installation is why we ask for a copy of your Bill of Sale (BOS). Since this document often contains confidential business information, we completely understand why customers may hesitate to share it.

The good news is that EmpireTV is not requesting this document for our own records. We only request it when DIRECTV requires proof that ownership of the facility has changed before approving a new commercial account.

Our goal is simply to help move your installation forward as quickly as possible while satisfying DIRECTV's account verification requirements.

When Is a Bill of Sale Required?

A Bill of Sale is generally requested whenever a facility has recently been purchased by a new owner and that new owner would like to establish a new DIRECTV commercial account.

Examples include:

  • A nursing home is sold to a new ownership group.
  • An assisted living community changes management and legal ownership.
  • A hotel or apartment complex is acquired by a new company.
  • An existing DIRECTV account must be replaced with a new account under the buyer's legal entity.

If ownership has not changed, a Bill of Sale is typically not required.

Why Does DIRECTV Need It?

Commercial DIRECTV accounts belong to a specific legal business entity. When ownership changes, DIRECTV cannot simply create a new account based on a verbal confirmation.

DIRECTV requires documentation showing that:

  • Ownership of the property has officially changed.
  • The previous owner no longer controls the account.
  • The new owner has the legal authority to establish DIRECTV service.
  • The account is opened under the correct legal entity.

Important

This is a DIRECTV policy, not an EmpireTV policy. EmpireTV simply helps collect the documentation required to complete the account approval process.

What About Confidential Information?

We understand that a Bill of Sale often contains sensitive business information such as the purchase price, financing terms, or other confidential details.

Whenever possible, confidential financial information may be redacted before submission, provided the document still clearly demonstrates that ownership has transferred.

Typically, DIRECTV only needs enough information to verify the transfer of ownership, including the buyer, seller, facility, effective date, and evidence that the transaction has been completed.

What Happens If a Bill of Sale Cannot Be Provided?

Without acceptable proof of ownership, DIRECTV may be unable to approve the new commercial account. This can delay installation until the required documentation has been received and reviewed.

If a Bill of Sale is unavailable, EmpireTV will gladly work with you to determine whether DIRECTV may accept another form of ownership documentation.

✓ The Bottom Line

EmpireTV understands that ownership documents are private. We only request a Bill of Sale when DIRECTV requires it to verify a change of ownership. Our team treats all documentation confidentially and will work with you to make the process as simple and secure as possible while avoiding unnecessary delays to your installation.
