Same box every time. Two things change.

Every job is built around the exact same headend — a 46-channel COM3000 system. Four coax lines come in from the satellite, feed the back of the system, get modulated (NTSC analog or HD QAM), and one combined RF output goes back out to the building.

What actually makes a transition simple or complicated is only two questions:

Variable 1 — Source side: what's on the roof?
Already a DIRECTV dish? A DISH Network dish? Nothing at all? This decides whether we touch the roof.
Variable 2 — Distribution side: where does the output go?
Reusing a clean existing output is easy. An unknown cable-company coax plant is where the surprises live.

INSIDE THE BUILDING

One building, three different jobs

The diagrams below show the same building on all three jobs. Green = reused (already on site), orange = new (we bring and install it), amber dashed = unknown (figured out on site). The dark box is the COM3000 — the constant in every job. TVs and rooms are unchanged either way.

1. DIRECTV Swap (PTR / COO) — reuse the dish, reuse the distribution, just swap the box

The property is already on DIRECTV, so the dish and its four lines stay right where they are. We show up, unplug the old headend, and plug the COM3000 into the exact same four lines. The output feeds the same riser, the same taps, the same TVs on every floor. Other than a basic upgrade — say analog to digital — it's a quick, predictable job. The roof is never touched (the LNB rides along only as a precaution).

  • Existing 4-line DIRECTV dish → nothing to install on the roof
  • No dish package, no cable spool, no taps
  • Only choice that matters: analog (Kit A) or HD QAM (Kit B)

2. DISH Conversion — the one thing you must do is swap the dish

The building has satellite service — but it's a DISH Network dish, which only carries three lines. The COM3000 needs four. So the single required change is on the roof: the old DISH antenna comes down, a DIRECTV-grade dish goes up, and four new lines run to the back of the system. Below the roof, nothing changes — same final output, same riser, same TVs. Predictable work, just with a trip to the roof added.

  • Existing DISH antenna can't feed the box → dish swap required
  • Headend like PTR/COO (A/B) + a dish package
  • Building distribution reused → no RG-6 spool or contingency taps

3. Cable Conversion — the unpredictable one: build the roof, decode the building

There's no satellite at all — the building runs on a cable company like Spectrum or Comcast, with their own hard line coming in from the street and their own coax plant threaded through the building. We build the entire roof from scratch: complete DIRECTV dish, mount, mast, LNB, and four new lines down to the headend. Then the unpredictable part — we don't know where, or if, we can cleanly inject our signal into that plant. Amplifiers in the riser, hard line runs, and odd splits can all get in the way, which is why the kit carries a 1,000-ft RG-6 box and contingency taps to rework the coax on site.

  • Full dish build: reflector, roof mount, mast, LNB, hardware
  • 1,000-ft dual RG-6 box for the new runs
  • At least ten 8-output 20 dB taps to rework an unknown coax plant
  • Drives Kit C (analog) or Kit D (HD QAM)

Why a DISH conversion always needs a new dish: 3 lines vs. 4

The COM3000 takes four lines off the satellite. A DIRECTV-grade dish delivers all four. A DISH Network dish only carries three — so it physically can't feed the box. That's why a DISH conversion always includes a dish swap, even though nothing downstream changes.

Which kit each transition drives

Every system starts from one of four base kits. Pick the project type, then the modulation (NTSC analog or HD QAM), then append any add-ons. The unit count sets the subsidy path.

For Kits C & D, "Yes" = one 1,000-ft box of dual RG-6 cable plus at least ten 8-output taps rated at 20 dB (contingency stock for modifying the existing coax plant).

DISH conversion: not a formal base kit in the COM3000 guide. It uses a PTR/COO-style headend (A or B) plus a dish package to replace the 3-line DISH antenna with a 4-line DIRECTV-grade dish — but it does not need the RG-6 spool and contingency taps a cable conversion does, since the building distribution is reused. Confirm the exact order build with purchasing.
